Our midwater trawling and purse seine fishing methods generally pose no impact to the seabed. Vessel monitoring system (VMS) requirements also limit the operations of vessels in shallow waters, thus minimising chances for midwater trawl nets to have any contact with the seafloor.
Since 2003 all our vessels have in place 50 tonne and 100 tonne catch sensors, which signal alarms to indicate when the maximum amount of fish has been caught. This has reduced the amount of catch at any one time and hence the need for discarding. Such catch sensors are not required by law and were a significant investment for us.
